Tomato Rasam.



The most basic Rasam and also has various methods of preparation . This is my Mom’s recipe. She adds tomato to dal and cooks so that the juice of Tomato gets in the dal well.


Tuvar Dal -1 small cup

Rasam Powder – 2 tsp

Tomato -1

Tamarind – a small pebble size.

Turmeric Powder -1 tsp

Hing – 1tsp

Mustard seeds -1 tsp

Jeera -1 tsp

Coriander leaves – few

Curry leaves – few

Salt .

Ghee – 1 tsp


Soak tamarind in water and extract the juice.


  • Cook tuvar dal with tomato in a pressure cooker and then mash them well .


DSC08001Heat the tamarind water in a heavy bottom vessel in a slow flame.

Add turmeric powder and salt to this.

When this boils add the tuvar dal  mixed with little water .


After some time  add rasam powder, little ghee and if needed a bit of jaggery



  • Switch off the rasam after few minutes.

Garnish with curry leaves and coriander leaves.


  • Temper mustard seeds, jeera in Ghee and add to rasam.
