Hotel Vathak Kuzhambu.


The tiny container in which the vathak  kuzhambu is kept ,is more attractive than the wide range of food in the Hotel Lunch Tray. We can see our hand reaching for it often and it becomes the first to be empty. It certainly is different from our home made Vathak  Kuzhambu . And almost all hotels serve at least this Vatha kuzhambu Tasty This recipe i jotted down from a book  my mother had . i remember the author is Mrs. Revathi Shanmugam, so the food has guaranteed authentic taste too. Though the original recipe did not include any vegetable i have included Drumsticks .


Tamarind – a small  lemon size

Onion – 1

Tomato -1

Drumstick – 1

Red Chilli Powder – 1  ½ tsp

Dhaniya Powder – 1  ½ tsp

Turmeric powder -1 tsp



To Temper

Mustard seeds -1 tsp

Methi seeds -1 tsp

Urad dal -1 tsp

Curry leaves –few

To Grind:

Coconut  -2 tbls

Roasted gram Dal – 2tsp

Garlic – 4  flakes

Sombu / saunf – 2 tsp


Soak tamarind and extract the juice .

Grind the required ones into a smooth paste .

Cut Onion , Tomato and Drumstick .

In a vessel add oil and temper with Mustard seeds, Methi, urad dal and curry leaves.

Add Onion, tomato, Drumstick one by one and sauté well.

Add  all  powder and Tamarind and cook in low flame .

When the vegetables are cooked add the ground paste and salt . Simmer for few minutes and switch off the flame
