Idly Uppuma.


Left Over food  always make us feel guilty as we are taught from Childhood not to waste  food . Sometimes we have to dump it in the garbage   for fear  of getting illness or  gaining  weight . But some food can turn as new dish when we use creativity .Our elders have created many food like that . i am posting this for newbies  who can learn from this.

Left over Idly is always a delight for us , because we can make Uppuma out of it . It has  a VIP status as it had even been portrayed in a  film, Surya Vamsam. It is such a delicacy that we can wantedly  cook more and have that left overs .

The overnight left over idly must be first softened . It can be just crumbled with our hands applying little gingelly  oil. If we have  a micro wave oven we can first soak  the Idly in water for 1 minute and then microwave it for  2 minutes . Now it will be easier to crumble.

Now for the actual  preparation.


Crumbled Idly – 1 cup

Sun dried Green chilli/Mor Milagai – 4  ( Green Chilli /Red Chilli can also be used )

Small onion – 4

Turmeric powder – 1tsp

Mustard seed s-1 tsp

Urad Dal -1 tsp

Oil and salt


It is   better  if we can use a non stick kadai .

Add oil. Temper mustard seeds, urad dal and Mor Milagai / Dry Green chilli .

Then sauté onion and add the  crumbled idly, little salt and turmeric powder.

Fry in low flame .

Add oil if necessary .

When the idly turns slightly roasted switch off the flame and serve hot .

Can be garnished with Curry leaves, coriander leaves and grated carrot .
