i like this Black eyed Peas and once i ate this in a friend’s house as a gravy. From then i fell in love with this . The softness associated with it is attracting . i usually make Vathak Kuzhmabu with this , so that its goodness can taken i full.
Although the black-eyed pea is a plant food, on the Food Guide Pyramid, created by the United States Department of Agriculture, the bean is included in the “Meat and Beans” section because it can be used as a protein source instead of an animal food. In fact, many vegetarians use legumes to substitute for meat when planning meals. One serving of black-eyed peas is equal to one-half cup.(Source http://www.fitday.com)
In the Southern United States, eating black-eyed peas on New Year’s Day is thought to bring prosperity in the new year.
Now the method.
Black Eyed Pea – 2 cups
Tamarind – a small lemon size
Small Onion – 6
Garlic – 3 flakes
Red Chilli Powder – 2 tsp
Dhaniya Powder – 1 tsp
Turmeric Powder -1 tsp
Hing – 1 tsp
Jaggery – 1 tsp
Mustard seeds -1 tsp
Methi seeds – 1tsp
Soak Black eyed Peas for 4 hours and then pressure cook.
Extract pulp of Tamarind into a thick juice .
Cut onion, garlic and Tomato. Heat oil in a heavy bottom vessel and add mustard seeds, Methi seeds .
Add Hing . Fry onion, Garlic in this followed by tomato.
Then add Chilli powder , Dhaniya powder and turmeric powder and fry well in the oil.
Add the tamarind water , Black eyed Pea along with the cooked water , curry leaves . Cover and cook this in low flame , till it thickens .
Finally add jaggery and salt .
Add a dash of Gingelly oil for the natural earth flavour. Serve this with plain rice
