Pappu Pulusu (Andhra Sambhar).

Sambhar is my father’s and daughter’s favourite . Although i do not favour it much owing to the lesser chances of having a hearty meal at home for our kids  due their busy schedule the option to switch to our Traditional cooking is better. So instead of a fried rice or Briyani i cooked sambhar today.Tamil magazine Mangaiyar Malar had  a collection of sambhar and from that i chose Pappu Pulusu. It is a simple one  yet tasty with lot of vegetables to give good nutritional value.


  1. Tuvar Dal – 1 cup(Cooked)
  2.  Small onion – 10
  3.  Garlic – 4  flakes
  4. Yellow Pumpkin, Drum stick, Brinjal, Unripe Mango-1 cup
  5.  Sambhar powder -1 and a 1/2 tsp
  6. Tamarind -1 small lemon size
  7. Tomato -2
  8. Mustard seeds- 1 tsp
  9.  Cumin seeds-1 tsp
  10.  Urad dal -1 /2 tsp
  11. Salt – to taste
  12. Curry leaves, Coriander  – few
  13. Jaggery – 1 tsp



  1. Soak Tamarind in water .
  2. Wash and soak tuvar dal for 20 minutes.
  3. Cook it is a pressure cooker.
  4. Cut all vegetables.
  5. Squeeze the tamarind juice .
  6. In  a thick vessel add oil and heat .
  7. Add mustard seed, urad dal, cumin seeds .
  8. Add the onion, tomato, vegetables ,garlic and saute well.
  9. Add the tamarind juice and then Sambhar Powder.
  10. Cover the vessel and cook in a low flame.
  11. It may take 20 minutes  for the vegetables to get cooked.
  12. When vegetables get cooked , add Cooked tuvar dal, salt and sugar.
  13. Cook for few more minutes.
  14. Garnish with curry leaves and coriander leaves.
